Desc: | The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive, graduate level introduction to some of the significant literature on justice in contemporary political philosophy. We will focus on the accounts found in Rawlsian liberalism, republicanism, and feminism. Beyond understanding and evaluating some of the central and defining texts and themes, we will pursue the subsequent debates and themes that arise between them. Primary texts will include: Justice as Fairness: A Restatement (Rawls), On The People's Terms (Pettit), and Toward a Feminist Theory of the State (MacKinnon). We will, in addition, read contemporary engagements with these works through articles, to be assigned on the basis of themes the class, collectively, wishes to pursue. Prerequisite: graduate standing or permission of the instructor. |
